Diabetes is a widespread disorder, and the numbers are rising. In the last two decades, the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than doubled in the United States. More than 30 million in the U.S. have diabetes. There are more than 84 million people with pre-diabetes but 90% of them do not know that they have it.
If you have diabetes or are a suspect, your physician will want you to have an eye exam. At Vision Pro, we do a very thorough diabetic eye exam.
Our retinal imaging technology lets us see conditions like microscopic hemorrhages (bleeds) from the blood vessels. The retina provides the only unobstructed view of these capillaries.
If needed, our doctor can also get an image with our OCT (optical coherence tomography) unit, which gives high detail of the retina, which can show things like swelling (edema) of the retina.
We also look for things like changes in your glasses prescription that can come from excess sugar in the lens of your eye.
Our doctor will often give your doctor a report, so be sure and bring us your doctor’s contact information. If you have diabetes it is imperative that you have an eye exam at least annually, or more often if needed.
